Anya was born as Aud in the year 860 in Sjornjost, a small Scandinavian village. She was an outsider in her community because of her strange habits and wild ideas. In 880, at the age of 20, she fell in love with the warrior Olaf, When Olaf drunkenly slept with a barmaid named Rannveig, and a furious Aud turned him into a troll, causing her to be drawn to the attention of D'Hoffran, when renamed her Anyanka and transformed into a vengeance demon.
For over a millennia Anyanka reigned misfortune down on men who were scorned by past lovers using a mystical pendant to change the world if the scorned woman simply wished it. In 1998 she arrived at Sunnydale at met Cordelia Chase, recently scorned by Xander. When a wish went awry, Anyanka lost her pendant and became merely Anya Emerson, a student at Sunnydale High School.
During such times, she grew rather attached to Xander Harris, even through her dislike of men, because of her human feelings that are coming to the surface. After a brief fleeing of the city during an apocalypse, she returns and embarks on a romantic relationship with her, developing more a more human personality with his patience and guidance.
